ElephantsHuman–Wildlife Coexistence

We’re on a mission to help protect Africa’s remaining natural ecosystems and the large wild animals they contain, while bringing major social and economic value to local communities and national governments.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Space for Giants is an international conservation charity working to protect Africa’s elephants, wildlife habitats and the communities living alongside them. It combines scientific research, conservation investment, law enforcement support and practical measures to reduce human–wildlife conflict. The organisation works with governments, local communities and private-sector partners to secure large landscapes, strengthen wildlife protection and develop nature-based economies. Its aim is to ensure that wildlife and wild places deliver lasting environmental, social and economic benefits.

1,000 mobile electric fences had been installed across Gabon by the end of 2024, benefiting over 15,000 people and proving more than 95% effective at preventing elephant crop raids.
More than 500,000 acres of critical wildlife habitat were supported and managed across Kenya, Uganda and Gabon during 2024.

Conservation Impact

Space for Giants delivers lasting conservation impact by protecting elephants, securing vital wildlife landscapes and helping communities live safely alongside large animals. Its programmes reduce crop-raiding and human–wildlife conflict, strengthen law enforcement, improve protected-area management and attract investment into nature-based economies. By combining science, practical field solutions, government partnerships and community support, the charity protects biodiversity while safeguarding livelihoods and demonstrating that healthy wildlife populations can generate meaningful social, environmental and economic benefits.

The Conservation Challenge

Key Threats and Pressures

Space for Giants faces the combined pressures of habitat loss, human–wildlife conflict, poaching, weak law enforcement and limited long-term funding. Expanding farms, roads and settlements increasingly fragment elephant ranges and bring wildlife into closer contact with people, often causing crop losses, damaged property and retaliatory killings. At the same time, protected areas require stronger management, better equipment and sustainable income. Balancing conservation with the economic needs of governments and local communities remains a central challenge.

Why it Matters

Overcoming these challenges would secure larger, better-connected habitats where elephants and other wildlife can thrive, while reducing the costs and risks faced by neighbouring communities. Stronger protection and more reliable conservation funding would improve law enforcement, create jobs and support sustainable tourism and other nature-based businesses. Most importantly, it would help ensure that people see tangible benefits from living alongside wildlife, building long-term local support for conservation and protecting Africa’s natural heritage for future generations.

Suggested Camps & Experiences

The best experience combines wildlife viewing in Loango National Park with an arranged community or conservation visit outside the park. Guided boat trips, forest walks, savannah drives and beach excursions offer opportunities to see forest elephants, gorillas, buffalo and other rainforest wildlife. Meeting local farmers or conservation staff, where permission has been secured, adds essential context by showing how mobile electric fences protect crops, reduce conflict and enable people to coexist more safely with elephants.

Travel Partnerships

Space for Giants offers exclusive conservation experiences. Supporters can book bespoke "Journeys for Giants" luxury safaris with top executives or join specialized itineraries with partners like Natural World Safaris. Alternatively, staying at eco-lodges like andBeyond Suyian Homestead directly funds their elephant protection and anti-poaching initiatives across Africa.
